The Chatsworth township where the Aqua Youth project operates is a densely populated area with 300,000 people, largely poor with high levels of unemployment. Sadly many young people in this township live in poverty and are subject to abuse of various kinds. In addition there are the significant issues of HIV/aids and racial tensions.Teenage suicide is an increasing problem.

Aqua Youth seeks to address these problems by training local volunteers to build relationships with young people and provide ongoing support. These volunteers run values-based Lifeskills courses in schools addressing HIV/aids, family and relationship issues as well as crime, drugs and racism.

In addition the Aqua Youth project also operates after school clubs helping children with reading, homework and providing food. Holiday clubs and leadership training camps are also held by Aqua Youth.
